Nzulezo Stilt Village lies on the freshwater Lake Amansuri. Roughly 500 people live on this solid wooden construction raised above the water. The village consists of a central wood and raffia walkway with about two dozen individual households on either side of it. Quite why the people of Nzulezo decided to build their village in this way, is an open question. The villagers told us they had come down from Mali 500 years ago, and settled on this side of the lake (even though their farming land was on the other side) because it was a more sheltered place protected from the wind and rain. Nzulezo is reached by dugout canoe, along the river and across the Lake - a one-hour trip. |
